Eglwys Sant Canna

Eglwys Sant Canna, agos i Henllan Amgoed, Sir Gaerfyrddin, Cymru

This site is marked on the map as St Canna’s Chair. It refers to a stone in the field besides the church on which people used to sit to be cured of certain ailments. They’d throw pins in a nearby well (which is no longer there), drink and sometimes bathe in the water and try to fall asleep on the chair. If they repeated this for a fortnight or more, then the curative effects were stronger. With a story like that I had to go see it for myself.

Any building being slowly reclaimed by nature, such as this, is always a worthy subject to photograph and to explore. The first thing you see from the church’s gateway, as your eyes are led down the long, near-overgrown path, is the church door just visible through the foliage.

The farthest gravestone from the viewer is in memory of Richard Thomas of Penback, Llangan, who died on the 11th of June 1897 and John Harries of the same address who died January 11th 1898. The inscription is in Welsh, and it was the last sentence etched into the gravestone that caught my attention – ‘AM HYNNY, BYDDWCH CHWITHAU YN BAROD‘ – ‘for this, be you also prepared’. Now then, you have been warned.
