Gartan Lough

I had spent the previous day scouting locations on the Inishowen peninsula, before finishing up in Gweedore – as the daylight was fading – trying to find a view of Errigal and Clady River from a track in a forest. But perhaps not surprisingly there were too many trees in the way so I headed to my accomodation having done over 500km of driving that day. During the night I came up with an idea of trying to shoot Erigal reflected in Dunlewy Lough, found a likely spot on the map and went back to sleep.

Very early the next morning I was stood at the shore of the lough on a still dawn with a perfect reflection of the mountain in the water. The sun was in the wrong position for what I needed (as I knew that it would be, but sometimes it’s worth taking a chance) and before long a breeze had picked up and the reflection was gone.

I had intended to head south scouting out more locations but with two nights of not much sleep and having done so much driving the day before I just didn’t have it in me so I headed for home. But as I dropped in to a valley shrouded in mist I could see someone’s home appear to float suspended in the air above the mist. I didn’t want to photograph that but as I was crossing a bridge over Gartan Lough I saw a row of stones in the water and the mist beyond. I pulled over, grabbed my camera and set about trying to get a composition that worked. The mist was starting to lift by the time I got the shot above but I really liked the muted colours.
