Néifinn i gcéin, Contae Mhaigh Eo

I happened upon this view by happy accident so I didn’t know which mountain it was that I was taking a picture of at the time. Even though the Sheeffry Hills were obscuring any possible view, I managed to convince myself that it was Croagh Patrick, as it was the right shape and the only mountain big enough and close enough.

A pair of German ladies who lived nearby told me that it was Nephin, and when I eventually found it on the map it seemed far too distant. But when I examined the map more closely I could see the evidence before me. Thanks to the relative heights of the mountains beside it and the television mast apparent in the image and marked on the map, I had to conclude that the ladies were right.

So I got out a tape measure, checked the map scale, and was astonished to discover that – as the crow flies – Nephin Mountain was 40 kilometres from where I was stood. I’m still amazed that I was afforded such an uninterrupted view.

Néifinn i gcéin

Ballycurrin Lighthouse, County Mayo

Heavy rains throughout the winter had submerged the twin jetties that run up to and alongside this lighthouse, but I think this actually adds to the image’s strength. I had to perch myself on a rock which sat on what had become a marsh, and bend over at an odd angle in order to operate the camera to get this shot. As you can probably tell by the slate grey sky, it was raining too.

Ballycurrin Lighthouse

Cruach Phádraig, Contae Mhaigh Eo

The most iconic mountain in Connacht, if not Ireland. Captured from this angle the presence of man, although prolific, seems to just about be clinging to the monolithic slab of rock that is Croagh Patrick.

Cruach Phádraig

Dúloch, Contae Mhaigh Eo

I had only just read about the Doolough Tragedy and it was with those poor souls and the inhumanity that caused their suffering that my mind lingered while I stood at a spot that they must have passed.

Waterfalls and long exposures are just meant for each other. Some claim that Aasleagh Waterfall is in Connemara, but it is found just past the Mayo border.

Eas Liath

Port na hAille, Acaill, Contae Mhaigh Eo

This image actually looks like it was shot on film (it wasn’t, I switched to digital in 2005). The digital noise in the dark sky looks more like film grain, the stack in the centre looks as if it were dodged in the dark room. I didn’t intend for it to turn out that way, but am pleased that it has, as it suits the scene.
