Carraig, Loch Bó Finne, Conamara

Trespassing is an occupational hazard. To get to this peaceful spot I had to hop over a fence and walk down through someone’s field to get to the water’s edge. But since it was 7am on a wet Sunday and there were no livestock in the field, I don’t think anyone noticed my presence.

Carraig

An tSean Céiḃ, An Spidéal, Conamara

Taken on the very day that the long hot summer of 2013 ended and winter made a return. The day before I was walking around in a t-shirt, on this day I took my jumper out of the wardrobe, and the following day we switched the heating back on in the house.

A bank of clouds on the horizon gave me a chance to shoot straight towards the sunset and still get a reasonably even exposure. 10 minutes after I captured this image, the moment had gone as the sun had turned the sky a bright orange throwing the exposure all over the place.

“The Queen’s Castle”, Líonán, Conamara

There are many abandoned houses in Connemara, but what caught my interest in this one is the For Sale sign in the window. The very definition of optimism from the seller and the very definition of a ‘fixer-upper’ for any buyer.

“The Queen’s Castle”

Glasoileán, Rinn Mhaoile, Conamara

A bank of fog sat on the horizon and gradually moved in from the coast to envelop the view as I watched from my position on the beach. Although it looked warm I discovered, when I went to leave, that my camera bag had a layer of hoarfrost on it.

Glasoileán

Báid Loch, Loch Ghleann Mhac Muirinn, Conamara

I had planned to shoot the lough from the higher vantage point of the road, but while waiting for the conditions to be right I thought that I may as well take a walk down the boreen that led from my car to the lough, at the end of which I happened upon this scene.

Báid Loch

An Abhainn Mhór agus Binn Leitrí, Conamara

I stood at this spot for an hour waiting for the sun to illuminate the foreground. The ground beneath my feet was frozen, the Owenmore river flowed past with such force that a few times I thought the sound of the water was that of an approaching car, the shadow of the mountain slowly shortened and clouds swept by in an endless display.

An Abhainn Mhór agus Binn Leitrí

Loch Coirib, Bòthar An Glann, Conamara

If you’re coming into Oughterard from the west, turn off the main road at the bridge, you’ll keep climbing until you reach a plateau, and you’ll be greeted by a fantastic view of Lough Corrib. It was whilst making my way back from that spot that catching this scene in the corner of my eye caused me to slam on the brakes and reverse. I’d passed this place before and it hadn’t inspired me, but viewed in the dying light of the day it looked far more appealing.

Loch Coirib

Cé, Bòthar An Glann, Conamara

To get this image I spent most of my time sheltering or running away from the rain. I’d been reading a book in the car for around an hour waiting for the rain to let up enough for me to think about opening my camera bag. Finally I was able to get out and start trying out some compositions, and just after I’d wrapped up with this one, I glanced across the lough and discovered that Lackavrea mountain had disappeared behind a grey wall of inclement weather which was heading my way. I threw my gear back into the bag, grabbed the tripod and legged it uphill and back to my car. I didn’t quite make it though, maybe I’m getting slower these days?

Caisleán Bhaile na hInse, Conamara

If you take the road towards Roundstone and turn off just before the old railway bridge, after a few twists and turns you’re presented with this spectacular view. I’ve been told that they serve very good food in the castle, but I had to settle for munching on my packed lunch at the side of the lake. Still, not a bad spot to take a bite.

Caisleán Bhaile na hInse

An bóthar go Loch Na Fuaiche, Conamara

A single skeletal tree, growing from under a stone wall, on a lonely mountain pass, before a large body of water, on a fine but cold day in the middle of winter. There’s very little about that combination that I’d be able to resist.

An bóthar go Loch Na Fuaiche

Loch Bhaile na hInse, Conamara

Reputedly built from stones taken from the nearby Toombeola Abbey and credited to Donell Ecowga O’Flaherty the castle in the centre of the image has been in existence since at least 1574. I imagine that this would be a very peaceful spot but I was unable to find any tranquility at the time due to someone in the vicinity firing off a shotgun at short intervals.

Loch Bhaile na hInse

Cillin Phédraig, Mám Éan, Conamara

I first discovered this amazing location online; a photo of the church amid a sweeping landscape. The caption said that it was in Connemara but not where. Eventually, after a little detective work, I managed to find the right spot.

It’s situated on a pass in the Maumturk mountains that connects two valleys and was a secret location for the local congregation to worship at a time when their religion was outlawed.

Cé Doite, Bòthar An Glann, Conamara

The Glann Road is one that I’d driven many times but this sight was always hidden. I would have remained unaware of it but for spotting a photo online which thankfully included an approximate location. Apparently the sticks are the remains of a wooden jetty destroyed by fire, and they are only just visible from the road. I hadn’t seen them before because you’d need to be looking for them. Photographing them was more difficult still as it involved climbing through the heavily wooded undergrowth and along the slippery stones at the edge of Lough Corrib in the dark.

Cé Doite

Cruach na Cara, Conamara

Situated on an island off the south coast of Connemara is this example of an Early Christian oratory. To get to it you have to find someone with a boat willing to take you out there. I gave this image an old-school film camera look which is very different to my usual style, but it suits the image. The roof was repaired in 1975 and it almost looks as if the image was taken then.
