I was nagging my Spanish friend Elia to pose for me because I wanted to recreate the style of a photograph I saw online. She had her own idea for a photo that she wanted to try and do, which turned out to be a far better idea. Her Kenyan friend Julie came along for the craic, so I roped her into taking part too.
The low key (black background) images are what resulted from my idea. The high key images are out takes from Elia’s idea. Watch this space for more.

Orange Goblin, The Pint, 20/4/12
I’ve seen these guys live a few times and they’re always great. I’d just moved to Dublin when they last played here, in the Voodoo Lounge (which doesn’t even exist anymore). This time I took my camera with me.

Here are some quick portraits I did over the Easter weekend, with some members of the family that I inherited when I got married.

Andrew WK, The Academy 10/4/12
Support by Dublin band Wounds.
When it’s time to party, we will party hard!
Watching a show by Andrew WK is like going for a drink with your dumbest but most enthusiastic friend. The band looked like they’d been rounded up outside the venue that afternoon, every song sounded like the last one, Andrew WK played a terrible solo on a guitar shaped like a slice of pizza, they played the worst cover of Free Bird I’ve ever heard, and there was a woman running around the stage in a leotard for no discernible reason. But despite – or maybe because of – this, I didn’t see one person there that night who wasn’t having a ball. The crowd were a writhing mass throughout. The energy did not relent. By the end the crowd were on the stage and Andrew WK was in the crowd.

Those of you who followed my old blog might remember these guys. Since I shot Tom, Hollie and Lola in May 2010, they’ve been joined by Otis. This was a short and sweet photo session, as it was a chilly day in early February.
Location: Laugharne, Wales.

I got up before sun rise the morning after Paddy’s day and headed for the Royal Canal. As the sun was peeking over Croke Park, I got these.

Inspired by a TV show featuring The Dubliners, I decided to grow my beard out. Inspired by my wife’s constant nagging, I decided to trim it. But before I did, I took these.

This is Adam and Dawid, Polish brothers born in Wales. These were taken in February when I was back in my home town.

My mate Calli likes his Death and Black metal. Not usually my cup of tea, but with a song called Pursuit of Vikings, he introduced me to Amon Amarth, a band who’s music makes you feel 10 feet tall whenever you take a listen.
This is them playing in Vicar Street, Dublin on the 15th of March, along with support from In Solitude and Grand Magus (who were excellent).
I’d actually secured a photo pass for Amon Amarth’s previous headline show in Dublin – arranged through their management – but due to the popularity of the show, the promoter had decided to prune the guest list, and my name didn’t make the final cut; meaning I’d had to run home, drop off my gear, run back and buy a ticket. So I was relieved to actually make it into the photo pit this time.

As I was heading out the door to shoot The Answer (see last blog post), my wife Jenni and our friend Elaine were on their way to see Florence and the Machine. Since I had my camera gear at the ready, and they were looking good, I took a few photos on our balcony.

Here are some pics of The Answer in Whelans, Dublin on the 2nd of March. Singer Cormac Neason has a lot of hair and he never stops moving. Getting a photo of his face was actually quite difficult.
You can also see the photos in Goldenplec and Rogue magazine.

A tip for staying in shape: sling a load of heavy camera equipment on your back and try to keep up with a 2 year old.
